Pharmacy Technician
Program Description

The Pharmacy Technician training prepares you to work under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist in a retail or hospital pharmacy.  This  is a 300 hour training that includes a 40 hour clinical experience in a local pharmacy.
Curriculum

Areas of study include:
  • General roles and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician
  • Drug packaging and dispensing
  • Inventory maintenance and control
  • Pharmacy laws, regulations & ethics
  • Customer assistance and communication skills
  • Pharmaceutical calculations
  • Basic pharmacology of common medications; brand and generic names; common uses; drug classifications
  • Medical and pharmaceutical terminology and abbreviations
  • Health insurance billing
  • Basic compounding techniques of sterile and non-sterile products
In addition to your classroom experience, you will also take part in a pharmacy clinical experience.
Professional Certifications and Industry Credentials

In Ohio, all pharmacy technicians must be certified or state-tested to perform most pharmacy-related duties.  Successful completion of this program includes taking the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).

To be eligible to sit for this exam and receive certification, students must be:
  • at least 18 years old,
  • have a high school diploma or GED, and
  • have no felony conviction or record of a pharmacy or drug-related conviction.
Career Opportunities

Pharmacy technicians work in variety of settings including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and mail order and retail pharmacies. Working under the direction of a pharmacist, pharmacy technicians assist patients, enter prescription orders, update patient information, bill insurance, assist with filling and labeling prescriptions, prepare inventory, order supplies and receive shipments.
